Cara Cares (About Nutrition!)
As we are heading into February it is important to recognize that it is Heart Month. With this in mind, a significant contributing factor to heart health is the inclusion of plant-based foods to the diet, which has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease. The Focus Five brands this month all possess plant properties that contribute to heart health and overall optimal nutrition status.
The Focus Five this month are:
- Galerie Au Chocolat
- Pro Bar
- Two Bears
- Sunny Boy
- Handfuel
Here are some interesting nutrition facts about how these brands can be heart healthy choices!
Galerie Au Chocolat
Chocolate can be a part of a healthy diet although portion size should still be moderate. Dark chocolate is the most beneficial as it contains phytonutrients such as flavanols, plant compounds that are of nutritional benefit. Milk chocolate does contain flavanols but to a lesser extent.
Flavanols
- Antioxidants that play a role in the repair of damaged cells
- May lower blood pressure.
- May lower blood cholesterol levels.
- Overall reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
- May reduce inflammation.
Minerals
Dark chocolate contains minerals that are also beneficial. Some of these are:
- Zinc-supports immunity
- Phosphorus-important for bone and teeth health
- Magnesium-can improve sleep quality.
As mentioned, portion size is important but its nice to know that what is widely considered a treat also has health benefits. Although milk chocolate does not have as many benefits as dark chocolate its still important to derive pleasure from chocolate, especially during the month of Valentine’s. Both types of chocolate appear to release endorphins which contribute to good moods. In addition, since Galerie Au Chocolat products have a relatively long shelf-life rest assured that they won’t expire by only having a small amount at a time!
Handfuel
Nuts are important contributors to heart health as they provide heart healthy substances, such as:
- Unsaturated fats
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Plant sterols (compounds that can lower cholesterol)
- Fiber
They are also a good source of plant-based protein.
Although Handfuel products are relatively low in sugar (some more than others), portion size is always important to keep in mind. However, they are still healthy snack options-a little goes a long way!
